The United States “War Minister” Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, have arrived in Puerto Rico, fueling speculation of a possible military escalation against Venezuela.
Their visit comes as U.S. defense officials cite concerns over alleged drug cartel networks operating in Venezuela, a justification critics warn may serve as a pretext for a broader military intervention.
Military deployments around Puerto Rico have intensified in recent days. Reports confirm the presence of F-35 fighter jets, Arleigh Burke–class destroyers, UAVs, and the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima in the region’s waters.
Washington has yet to issue an official statement on whether military action is imminent, but the build-up has sparked regional concerns, with observers noting that any escalation could destabilize Latin America.
Venezuela has repeatedly warned the U.S. against what it calls “imperialist aggression,” vowing to defend its sovereignty if attacked.
