Leadaija news reports that the United Nations Security Council has voted overwhelmingly to lift sanctions previously imposed on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The decision, which saw 14 votes in favour and none against, marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Syria following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
Speaking after the vote, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, said the resolution reflects the Council’s recognition of a new political phase in Syria.
“With the adoption of this text, the Council is sending a strong political signal that recognizes Syria is in a new era since Assad and his associates were toppled,” Waltz stated.
The development is seen as part of the international community’s broader efforts to reintegrate Syria into global diplomacy after years of civil conflict and sanctions.
Analysts say the move could open doors for renewed humanitarian and reconstruction partnerships in the war-torn nation.
