United States lawmakers have criticised the Nigerian government over a reported $9 million lobbying contract in Washington, warning that the deal appears designed to downplay serious human rights and religious freedom violations in the country.

The criticism came during a US congressional hearing on global religious freedom, where lawmakers questioned the credibility and intent of the lobbying arrangement allegedly entered into by the Nigerian government.

According to participants at the hearing, the contract raised red flags amid persistent reports of religious persecution, insecurity, and rights abuses in parts of Nigeria.
