Chaos erupted in parts of Ajegunle, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State on Saturday, following a reported move by a local monarch to eject hundreds of residents from their homes.
Eyewitnesses said the tension began early in the morning when palace officials, accompanied by some hoodlums , arrived at several streets in the densely populated community, allegedly to enforce an eviction order.
The move sparked panic as families scrambled to protect their belongings, while others took to the streets in protest.
Shops and roadside markets hurriedly shut down, with some residents fleeing to neighbouring areas to avoid possible clashes.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that several people sustained injuries during scuffles between residents and the eviction team.
Community leaders have accused the monarch of attempting to reclaim vast portions of land without due process, describing the eviction as “unlawful” and “an assault on the rights of the people.” They called on the Lagos State Government to intervene immediately to prevent the situation from degenerating into full-scale violence.
