Alwan Hassan, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has sparked controversy with his recent remarks dismissing the presidential ambitions of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Speaking during a political interview in Channel TV, Hassan emphatically ruled out the chances of both men defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election, claiming neither has the appeal or values to secure votes in the Northern region.
“We will not vote for a President that will import alcohol into the North or a man who is being fed by his wife,” Hassan declared.
Though he did not mention names directly, political observers believe the reference to “alcohol” was aimed at Peter Obi, who has previously come under criticism from some Northern conservatives over alleged policies during his time as governor. The remark about being “fed by his wife” is seen as a jab at Rotimi Amaechi, who has faced speculation about his political inactivity and personal life since leaving public office.
Alwan Hassan’s statement has drawn mixed reactions across political and social platforms, with critics accusing him of promoting divisive rhetoric and reinforcing gender stereotypes.
Meanwhile, supporters of Obi and Amaechi have dismissed the comments as baseless and disrespectful, emphasizing that the 2027 election should be based on leadership competence, economic vision, and national unity—not personal attacks or regional sentiments.
As political alignments begin to shift ahead of the 2027 polls, this latest remark adds to the intensifying political temperature and deepening North-South discourse in Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
