Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted that his side is “miles away” from Liverpool, as the reigning Premier League champions face the reality of surrendering the title after a turbulent campaign.
City, who have lifted the league trophy four years in a row, are currently 18 points behind leaders Liverpool and now sit fourth on the table. And with the season winding down, Guardiola says even qualifying for the Champions League would be a “massive achievement.”
Guardiola’s Brutally Honest Take
“I’ve tried to convince the players that qualifying for the Champions League is a huge achievement in this country and in this league,” Guardiola told reporters after City’s 2-0 win over Everton.
“Thinking that is not enough for us would be arrogant.”
Despite goals from Nico O’Reilly and Mateo Kovacic sealing the win at Goodison Park, Guardiola made it clear that his side’s performance this season has not matched their usual high standards.
“We are miles away from Liverpool and Arsenal,” he admitted. “But tonight we sleep fourth. It’s in our hands.”
Title Race Nearly Over
The title could be officially decided by Sunday, with Liverpool needing just a win over Leicester City and Arsenal hoping Ipswich Town drops points to stay alive in the race.
For City, the focus has shifted to securing a top-four finish, especially with the added advantage of a fifth Champions League spot for English teams next season — thanks to strong UEFA performances across the league.
De Bruyne’s Farewell in Sight?
City fans showed their appreciation for Kevin De Bruyne, who is expected to leave at the end of the season. Players and staff joined supporters in chants at Goodison Park, marking what may be the Belgian maestro’s final run in sky blue.
“What these players have done for a decade, I’m so grateful,” Guardiola added. “This season more than ever, through tough periods, especially injuries.”
With five games to go, including three at home, Guardiola says City must treat every match like a final.
“Hopefully we can achieve this big success and secure Champions League football,” he concluded.
