The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent remarks about government neglect of public schools.
Speaking during a public event in Abuja, Wike said he was disappointed that Obi — whom he described as “one of the social media presidential candidates” — accused the government of abandoning public schools.
“I heard one of the social media presidential candidates went to a public school and was saying that the government has abandoned public schools. In particular, his name is Peter Obi,” Wike said. “It’s not everything you must play politics with.”
The FCT Minister accused Obi of hypocrisy, alleging that while serving as governor of Anambra State for eight years, he failed to develop the state’s educational infrastructure.
“Peter Obi, you were governor for eight years in Anambra State. If you had finished all the jobs in 8 years, nobody will be talking about developing Anambra now. The money was there to develop Anambra State, but instead of developing the state, he took the money and put it in Fidelity Bank, where he was the highest shareholder, so that he’d be making profit while Anambra would be suffering.”
Wike further challenged Obi to a public comparison of achievements, saying his two years as FCT Minister surpass Obi’s eight years as governor.
“I challenge him to come out publicly and compare what he did for eight years in Anambra with what I have done in the FCT in just two years. By next week, we’ll showcase what we’ve done regarding public schools in Abuja.”
He also criticized Obi’s recent gesture of celebrating his birthday in an IDP camp, describing it as political theatrics.
“You cannot become president only when you go to one IDP camp. When you were governor, why didn’t you do your birthday in an IDP camp? It’s now that you want to be president that you remembered the less privileged.”
