Public affairs commentator, and. Former presidential aids Reno Omokri, has reacted to Wednesday’s shooting near the White House, describing it as a stark reminder that the United States faces security challenges as serious—if not worse—than those in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his verified X page on Thursday, Omokri said the incident, which left two National Guard soldiers critically injured and forced a security lockdown around the White House to protect the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump and senior officials, shows that “America needs peace just as much as Nigeria.”

He expressed gratitude that the President of the United States remained safe during the attack, adding that “God has preserved him for greater assignments.”

Omokri recalled the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on the then former President, noting that the latest shooting fits into a troubling pattern of rising gun violence in the U.S. According to him, over 40,000 people die annually from gun-related incidents in America, a figure he claims is significantly higher than Nigeria’s terror-related fatalities.

Citing the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI), Omokri noted that Nigeria recorded 565 terror-related deaths, far below American gun-violence statistics.

He argued that despite Nigeria’s insecurity challenges, the country has never witnessed an armed attack near the Aso Rock Presidential Villa or a gun battle involving soldiers at the seat of power.

Omokri criticised Nigerians who claim the United States is safer, warning that Black migrants statistically face higher risks of gun violence in America.

“No matter how bad things get in Nigeria, we have never had a year in which over 40,000 people were killed or injured by gun crimes,” he wrote.

He urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies as they work to restore peace across the country.
