Veteran Nollywood actor and legal professional Kenneth Okonkwo has joined the ongoing conversation surrounding the ethnic identity of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, highlighting the cultural and linguistic ties between the Ikwerre and Igbo people.
During an appearance on Symfoni TV, Okonkwo provided an in-depth explanation of how language plays a crucial role in determining ethnic identity.
“Language is what defines your national identity,” Okonkwo remarked, specifically addressing the issue of the Ikwerre people. “Is Ikwerre fully Igbo? Yes, it is. In Igboland, some dialects refer to it as ‘Ikwerre,'” he clarified.
To further strengthen his argument, Okonkwo referenced another well-known political figure: “Take the case of former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, who is Anioma—yet an Igbo person.” He continued, “Therefore, ‘Ikwerre’ is simply a dialect of the Igbo language.”
While Okonkwo acknowledged the right of individuals to self-identify, he made a clear distinction between personal choice and historical or cultural reality. “According to language, Ikwerre is Igbo,” he asserted, adding, “It is absolutely his right to choose not to identify as Igbo, and that’s his personal choice.”
However, Okonkwo pointed out that individual preferences don’t change the inherent ethnic ties: “But one cannot claim not to be Igbo, because by language and tribe, they are inherently Igbo, and that’s not a matter of personal choice.”
This statement adds a new layer to the ongoing debate surrounding identity, ethnicity, and political representation within Nigeria.
Hear him speak: ” Wike But he cannot say he is not Igbo because, by language, by tribe, he is Igbo, and he doesn’t have a choice about it.”
