Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has terminated the contract for the 13-kilometre Apo-Karshi Road, originally awarded in 2011 to Kakatar Construction Company Ltd by former FCT Minister Bala Mohammed, due to prolonged non-performance.
The minister announced the revocation on Thursday while inspecting several ongoing road projects, including Karu-Customs-CBN Road, Gishiri-Katampe Road, and Apo-Wasa Carriageway.
Dissatisfied with the previous contractor’s pace, Wike said the project has been re-awarded on an emergency basis to SCC Nigeria Limited, a company capable of delivering promptly. Work has already resumed at the site.
He emphasized that road infrastructure should not be used for political games at the expense of residents’ welfare.
Wike also announced that the long-awaited Kubwa-Bwari Road has been awarded and construction has begun, providing an alternative route for commuters.
During the inspection, he addressed a shop owner whose building, marked for demolition for blocking a major water channel, was upset about the decision. The minister assured her of adequate compensation but stressed that the structure must be removed to prevent flooding in the area, noting that public interest must take precedence over individual emotions.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the warm reception from residents along the project routes, saying it reflected appreciation for the government’s development efforts and that the core purpose of governance is to improve citizens’ lives.
He revealed that many of the ongoing road projects will be commissioned as part of the third-anniversary celebrations of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The minister stated that the FCT Administration will not initiate any new contracts in 2026, focusing instead on completing all projects started in 2025, given that 2026 is a political year.
