Woman Arrested for Stealing Two-Day-Old Baby at Zomba Central Hospital

Zomba Police have arrested a 35-year-old woman, identified as Jesse Mkondira of Liwonde, Traditional Authority Mlumbe, for stealing a two-day-old baby boy at Zomba Central Hospital.

According to Zomba Police Station spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano, the incident occurred on 21 September 2025 when the baby’s mother, Yasintha Robert, was admitted to the hospital where she gave birth.If You’re Reading From Phoenix Click On Read Original  at the top To Read Full Article

Sipiliano explained that the suspect posed as a postnatal patient and struck up a conversation with the new mother. However, on 22 September, Yasinta woke up to find both her newborn and the suspect missing.

The matter was reported to police, prompting the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch an investigation. Mkondira was later traced and arrested in Chirimba, Blantyre, where the baby was safely recovered.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer a charge of child theft.
