The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has issued a clear warning to Messrs Reynolds Construction Company, the contractor responsible for the East-West Road, Section III (Eleme Junction – Onne Junction).
He emphasized the urgency for them to allocate additional resources to accelerate the construction progress, or they may risk having their contract revised or terminated.
The Minister acknowledged the commendable quality of the work completed thus far but reminded the contractor that there is a deadline of April 2025 to finish a portion of the carriageway.
On Thursday, Mohammed Ahmed, the Director of Press and Public Relations, announced that Umahi has initiated an inspection of current road projects in the South-East and South-South geopolitical regions. The inspection began with Section III of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, specifically the stretch between Umuahia and Aba.
“The ministry will not tolerate delays. Any contractor who does not meet his contractual obligations will face consequences, cumulating into a 14-day Notice of Termination of Contract.”
The minister also voiced his dissatisfaction with the sluggish progress on Section IV (Aba – Port Harcourt) of the same project, which is being managed by China Civil Engineering Construction Company.
He pointed out that, to date, only N7 billion of the N21 billion allocated for the project last year has been utilized.
he directed the Federal Controller of Works in Rivers State to issue a cautionary notice to the contractor, indicating that termination of the contract would be considered if there wasn’t a noticeable boost in the work.
While we appreciate the quality of work from the team at {Ltd.}, we have asked them to expand their efforts by deploying to two additional sites. This will help accelerate the construction process and, most importantly, ensure we meet the established deadline.
According to the statement, the minister’s tour of duty included a visit to the Bodo-Bonny Road, where he expressed his dissatisfaction with the progress made on the project.
“At all construction sites visited, Umahi stressed the urgency to meet deadlines, emphasising that all federal contractors must intensify their efforts to ensure the timely realisation of projects, in line with the Federal Government’s resolve to enhance infrastructure and transportation as enablers of growth, succinctly captured in the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The essence is to improve connectivity, as well as stimulate socio-economic growth.
“The expectation is that every controller delivers on his mandates, according to specifications and time allotted. There is no room for further delays,” the statement reads in Tap Here To Read Full DetailsÂ
