2027 Elections: Tinubu’s Running Mate to Be Decided After APC Convention – Party Secretary

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general elections will only be determined after the party’s national convention, which typically takes place a year before the polls.

Basiru made the remarks on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme aired Friday morning, amid growing speculation about the APC’s 2027 electoral strategy.

As far as we are concerned, the national summit held at the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr. President based on his track record, and a large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have overwhelmingly expressed support,” Basiru stated.

He emphasized that discussions around the vice-presidential slot are premature, adding that no formal decisions have been made regarding the position currently held by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The question of running mate is not yet onboard,” he said. “Nobody has come forward to say the President has made any adverse decision regarding the current Vice President.

The APC scribe also urged party members and the general public to focus on governance and ongoing reforms rather than speculation about political tickets for 2027.

The ruling party is expected to hold its national convention in 2026, ahead of the next general elections.
