The Headquarters of 3 Division Nigerian Army and Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) on Tuesday hosted a seminar to promote peaceful coexistence among communities in Plateau State.
The seminar, with the theme “Consolidation on Security Gains for a Harmonious Co-existence in 2025,” took place at the 3 Division Auditorium, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos. It brought together government officials, security heads, traditional rulers, and community leaders from seven local government areas: Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Bokkos, Mangu, Riyom, Jos North, and Wase.
Major General AE Abubakar, the outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander OPSH, highlighted the seminar’s role in fostering collaboration for sustainable peace.
“It is expedient to note that we witnessed a marked decrease in hostilities, increased farming and herding activities with minimal confrontations. These successes were achieved not merely through military operations but also through dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders,” Abubakar said.
The GOC encouraged participants to propose actionable solutions to sustain the peace achieved, emphasizing their role in promoting harmony.
Interactive sessions allowed stakeholders to share ideas on addressing lingering security challenges. Many commended Abubakar’s leadership, with community leaders describing him as a pragmatic and impactful commander.
Representing the Plateau State Government, retired Brigadier General Gakji Shippi, Special Adviser on Security, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peacebuilding.
“The government is resolute in ensuring a peaceful Plateau and will continue to work hand-in-hand with security agencies and communities to address the root causes of conflict,” Shippi said.
Traditional rulers and community leaders echoed calls for unity and justice, stressing that lasting peace requires fairness and equality among all communities.
The incoming GOC, Maj Gen EF Oyinlola, praised Abubakar’s achievements and pledged to build on the progress made.
“I appeal for your support as we tackle the security challenges ahead. Together, we can achieve enduring peace,” Oyinlola said.
The seminar ended with a presentation of gifts to the outgoing GOC, the unveiling of the new commander, and a group photograph symbolizing unity among stakeholders.
