Many people treat ulcers, yet the pain keeps coming back. If an ulcer refuses to heal, it’s usually because the real cause is still there.
Before you assume your ulcer is not healing, it first matters to confirm if what you have is a peptic ulcer. An endoscopy test can clarify this.
Below are a few reasons why peptic ulcers still linger, and what to do:
1. An ulcer will not heal if H. pylori infection is still present. This bacteria damages the stomach lining. If treatment does not fully clear it, the ulcer keeps reopening.
2. Using painkillers like ibuprofen, diclofenac, or aspirin slows healing. These drugs weaken the stomach’s protective layer. Even small daily doses can keep an ulcer active.
3. Skipping or stopping ulcer drugs too early is a major reason. Ulcers need weeks to heal fully. Stopping once pain improves allows it to come back stronger.
4. Smoking delays healing. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the stomach lining. This makes repair slow and incomplete.
5. Alcohol irritates the ulcer surface. It increases stomach acid and damages healing tissue. Regular drinking can keep the ulcer open.
6. Poor diet habits matter. Eating late at night, too much spicy food, or heavy fatty meals increases acid release and pain.
7. Severe stress affects stomach acid and healing hormones. Long-term stress can slow recovery even when drugs are correct.
8. Some ulcers don’t heal because of wrong diagnosis. Not all stomach pain is an ulcer. Gallbladder disease or reflux can mimic ulcer pain.
9. Rarely, an ulcer that won’t heal may be due to stomach cancer. This is more likely in older adults or with weight loss and vomiting blood.
What To Do If Your Ulcer Is Not Healing
- Complete your full medication course
- Test and treat H. pylori properly
- Stop unnecessary painkillers
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Eat small, regular meals
- See a doctor if pain lasts beyond 4–8 weeks
An ulcer that doesn’t heal is a warning, not something to ignore.
