Two young men, aged 23 and 24, have been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man in the Haak en Steek area of Barkly West, Northern Cape, on Sunday.
According to police, the incident stemmed from accusations that the deceased had stolen and slaughtered a goat belonging to others in the community. Tensions reportedly escalated into violence, resulting in the victim sustaining fatal stab wounds.
The suspects appeared in the Barkly West Magistrate’s Court shortly after the arrest. They face murder charges as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the killing. Police have not yet released the names of the victim or the accused, pending further procedural steps.
Haak en Steek, a residential area on the outskirts of Barkly West, has previously seen isolated incidents of violence, including a 2023 stabbing murder that led to a 15-year prison sentence for the perpetrator.
This latest case highlights ongoing concerns around stock theft and community disputes in rural and semi-rural parts of the Northern Cape, where livestock often represents significant economic and cultural value. Authorities urged calm while the probe proceeds.
Further court appearances are expected as the case advances.
