Culled from the Parliamentarian Magazine:
In Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, where citizens increasingly demand measurable impact, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has distinguished himself through a combination of legislative advocacy and people-centred development initiatives across Kano North Senatorial District and beyond.
Senator Barau’s interventions in the period under review; 2023 to 2026, cut across education, infrastructure, agriculture, security, and economic empowerment, reflecting a deliberate, multi-dimensional approach to development.
The Parliamentarian Magazine chronicled 10 major legislative and development interventions of Senator Barau.
North West Development Commission (NWDC)
One of Senator Barau’s most significant legislative contributions is the establishment of the North West Development Commission (NWDC).
The commission is designed to tackle the region’s long-standing developmental challenges, including poverty, infrastructure deficits, and environmental concerns. It is expected to catalyse coordinated and sustainable development across the North-West.

Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo
To expand access to higher education, Senator Barau sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo. The sponsorship of the bill led to the conversion of Federal Polytechnic Kabo to Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo.
It would be recalled that it was Senator Barau who facilitated the establishment of Federal Polytechnic Kabo and now he has to his credit the conversion of the institution to a university
The institution is expected to promote science, innovation, and technology-driven education, while also boosting local economic activities in Kano North, Kano State, North West geopolitical zone and the country as a whole.
Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship Programme
Senator Barau has facilitated foreign postgraduate scholarships for dozens of graduates in specialised fields such as Cyber Security, Forensic Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. This intervention has helped the beneficiaries further their studies and acquire skills in cutting-edge fields in line with the 21st century.
Through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), 70 students from across the three senatorial districts of Kano State were selected for the first batch of scholarships. Some of them have completed their studies and returned home, while the rest are expected to return within a short period of time.
The initiative is aimed at building a highly skilled workforce to fast-track the development of the country.
Domestic Scholarships For Students In Tertiary Institutions
On the domestic front, thousands of students from Kano North studying in various universities and other tertiary institutions have benefited from cash grants. This has been ongoing for many years. Each Kano North student receives N50,000 annually to cater for registration and other academic expenses, courtesy of the People’s Senator.
Distribution Of Vehicles To Party And Community Leaders
To enhance grassroots coordination and engagement, vehicles were distributed to party leaders and key stakeholders. Among them are state party leaders of the APC, chairmen and secretaries of the 13 LGAs in Kano North, and elected local government chairmen, among others.
This has improved mobility, strengthened political structures, and facilitated community outreach across the district.
