Major Seun Fadipe (Rtd) has shared an extraordinary insider’s perspective on a planned coup against General Sani Abacha, driven by fears of the military leader’s potential permanent political entrenchment.
Speaking in a video shared by Channels TV, Fadipe unveiled the motivations behind the aborted coup attempt, offering a rare glimpse into the high-stakes political maneuvering of Nigeria’s military era. The primary catalyst was a deep-seated concern about Abacha’s alleged presidential ambitions.
According to Fadipe, General Oladipo Diya, his direct superior, explicitly explained the rationale behind the planned intervention. “He said because Abacha wanted to turn himself to civilian President and once he does that he will become life president and he did not want that to happen,” Fadipe recounted.
The planned coup was not a spontaneous act but a calculated response to what the military officers perceived as a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic potential. Diya and his fellow officers viewed Abacha’s potential transformation from military leader to civilian president as a direct path to permanent, undemocratic rule.
The operational plan was meticulously crafted, centered around a seemingly routine military conference in Enugu. The officers had strategically positioned themselves to potentially remove Abacha from power during this event. However, fate intervened when Abacha unexpectedly canceled his trip, effectively thwarting the entire operation.Tap Here for the Full Story
