Following the incident at De Latinos Club in Umuahia on Sunday night, the Abia State Government has condemned the police invasion, describing it as an unacceptable act of violence against innocent citizens and businesses.
Governor Alex Otti, reacting to the incident, on Monday, directed the Commissioner of Police to identify and prosecute all officers involved in the attack, assuring that justice will be served.
The attack, which stemmed from a dispute over suya meat, resulted in multiple injuries and property destruction.
Witnesses reported that armed police officers, allegedly called in by a colleague who denied entry with suya meat, stormed the premises, using tear gas and force on customers and staff.
To demonstrate the government’s commitment to protecting businesses, Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu visited the scene on behalf of the governor.
He met with the CEO of De Latinos, Mr. Emmanuel Okenini, and the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, to assess the situation.
Speaking during the visit, Engr. Emetu said, “Government would do everything to protect investors and their investments in the state, assuring that government would get to the root of the matter.”
Also addressing the situation, CP Danladi Isa expressed regret over the incident and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
“Officers behind the incident have been arrested and are being interrogated,” he confirmed.
Governor Otti reassured residents and business owners that his administration remains committed to creating a safe environment for investments to thrive.
He vowed that the government would not tolerate any act capable of instilling fear among law-abiding citizens.
“The government will get to the root of this matter. No one is above the law, and every officer found guilty will face justice,” said Emetu.
