The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has said that Nigeria’s capital city is becoming the true Federal Capital Territory that it is supposed to be.
Speaking at the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Wike said despite not being the first minister of the FCT, he can boldly say the city is coming back to life.
“I’m not the first FCT Minister, but I’ve made it clear that no one is exempt. Mention one poor person who owns property in Maitama—none.
“They are all wealthy individuals who don’t want to pay taxes. Well, they must pay. If they don’t, I will touch them, and heaven will not fall—in fact, it will be at peace,” he said.
He also warned that he was not appointed a minister for a beauty contest but to deliver good governance to the people.
He also noted that most people living in choice areas across the FCT deliberating default on payment of taxes and ground rent.
He said these property owners do so with the hope that the government continue to fund their lifestyles and infrastructural development.
He further commended President Bola Tinubu for his tenacity and boldness in implementing reforms since assuming office in 2023.
According to Wike, the reforms by the president have been beneficial to Nigerians.
