On February 1, 2025, Udochukwu’s wife left their three children at home while she went out for an official assignment. It was not a school day, and the children were expected to remain indoors as usual. However, upon her return around 5 p.m., she noticed something unusual—the doors of their home were wide open, unlike before.

Expecting her children to greet her as they usually did, she was met with silence. She checked the kitchen, only to find the food she had left for them untouched. Confused, she assumed they had stepped out, even though they rarely visited anyone without supervision.

Initially, she did not suspect anything was wrong. But as time passed and the children remained missing, she grew anxious. She began calling their friends and neighbors, but no one had seen them. The search lasted from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., growing increasingly frantic.

At Udochukwu’s suggestion, his wife went to their church to check if the children had gone there. A priest accompanied her back home. Meanwhile, a medical student living in their compound had joined the search.

Upon returning to the house, the medical student hesitated before asking Udochukwu’s wife, “Do your children usually play in any strange way?” The question immediately raised alarm. Sensing the worst, the priest intervened before the student could reveal more. Moments later, people began gathering at their apartment, whispering and going in and out.

As his wife grew suspicious, the devastating truth was finally revealed—her three children had been found inside a freezer. The medical student, in shock, broke the news to Udochukwu over the phone while he was still in Edo State.

The children—nine-year-old Chikaima, eight-year-old Chimziterem Dominica, and five-year-old Chimdirim David—were found in a forced sitting position inside the freezer. There were no visible injuries, except for bleeding from their noses. There were also no signs of forced entry into the home, leaving the family and authorities searching for answers.

Udochukwu insists his children never played inside the freezer, nor was there any evidence that they had climbed into it themselves. “If they had, there would have been a chair nearby to help them get in. But there was none,” he said.

The pain of losing his children continues to haunt him. “I still hear them shouting ‘Daddy, daddy… mummy, mummy,’ but no one came to help. I look at their pictures and apologize to them, imagining their struggle for air,” he said tearfully.

He described Chikaima as an exceptionally intelligent girl, known in school as a ‘Kri Kri Star’ for her academic excellence. Chimziterem was a strong-willed, thoughtful child who often helped settle family matters. Chimdirim, the youngest, had a gentle and angelic singing voice that brought joy to their home.

The children’s bodies remain in the morgue as police investigations continue. Udochukwu expressed satisfaction with the efforts of law enforcement and has placed his faith in their ability to uncover the truth. However, no arrests have been made so far.

Despite the unimaginable loss, Udochukwu and his wife remain united in their grief. He acknowledges the emotional toll it has taken on her and ensures she is never left alone. “This kind of incident could make someone do something drastic. But we have people around her, giving support.”

For now, they are staying with relatives until their apartment is unsealed. Though shattered, Udochukwu holds on to the memories of his children, unwilling to let them fade. “Even though they are no longer with us, I still see myself as having four children,” he said. “I will enlarge their photographs and look at them always. They were a special gift to me, and I will never forget them.Read Full Details
