The Governor who also sympathised with other victims of the mishap who sustained various degrees of injury, said his administration was committed to ensuring that they receive the necessary medical treatment and support, courtesy of his government.
In a statement signed by Sir Kula Tersoo, Chief Press Secretary (CPS), to the governor, and made available to Saturday INDEPENDENT in Makurdi on Friday, Alia expressed gratitude to the leadership of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), for their show of solidarity and support to his government over the incident.
Also as part of measures to check and mitigate future occurrences of boat mishaps in the state, Governor Alia, promised to make available life jackets at every crossing point in Benue.
According to the statement, “‘The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, expresses his heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the tragic boat accident that occurred over the weekend.
“He also sympathises with those who sustained varying degrees of injury from the mishap, stating that his administration is committed to ensuring they receive the necessary medical treatment and support.”
According to Kula, the Governor stated that, “It is sad that this incident has brought immense sorrow to our communities, and I share in your grief during this difficult time.
“Your well-being is our priority, and we will work diligently to provide the care you (the injured) need for a swift recovery.”
Governor Alia, who expressed gratitude to the leadership of the NGF, for their show of solidarity and support over the tragic incident, said “Your compassion and partnership are invaluable to us, and together we can navigate these challenging times.”

However, on the interim, the governor said he would provide life jackets at all crossing points in the state, pointing out that the initiative was crucial to reducing casualties to zero in the event of any mishaps.
