Speaking in a media chat targeted at accurate reportage of the core values and activities of the society, held in Awka, Anambra State capital, the State Chairman of NRCS, Professor Ifeyinwa Emelie, stressed that as the watchdog of the society that plays the role of informing, educating and enlightening, the Fourth Estate of the Realm should be able to set agenda in addition to make leaders, organisations and institutions accountable for their actions.
Emelie frowned at abuses and misuse of emblems of the Red Cross by medical centres and civil Society organisations, particularly the Red Cross emblem which she noted, had been bastardised to misrepresent its objectives.
She said the group responded to the plight of the1000 worst-hit households of flood in Anambra West, Ayamelum and Ogbaru Local Council Areas of the state to alleviate their suffering.
Represented by the State Secretary, Kingsley Okoli, an engineer, Emelie observed that the society, as a strong partner of International Committee of Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), had always been guided by the Principle of Impartiality and never discriminated n grounds of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions.
Emelie said: “NRCS, as a non-governmental, humanitarian, voluntary organisation guided also by principles of impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals in most urgent cases of distress.”
Contributing, the State Communications Officer, Joseph Obidigwe and Communications Adviser, Dr. Ruth Chigbue, stated that the Society initiates active efforts and provides relief assistance and peace to the injured to ensure prevention of casual deaths arising from any disaster or conflict.
