Former US President Donald Trump on Sunday survived what appeared to be another assassination attempt on his life, less than two months after he was hit by a bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.
An official statement from Trump’s campaign team said gunshots were heard near the former president’s vicinity at Palm Beach Golf Club, Florida.
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No additional details are available at this time,” a Spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, Steven Cheung, said in a short statement.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in its reaction to the incident, said it “is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination” of the former president.
According to a report that quoted a security source, “A person has been detained after an incident at Trump’s golf club, and officials believe the intention was to target the former U.S. president.”
The US Secret Service has said the shooter has been apprehended.
It added that it is now in collaboration with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the protective incident involving Trump.
“The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe. @pbso will have more details soon, Full Details” Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service, said.
The Palm Beach Golf Club shooting makes it the second assassination attempt on the life of Trump after he narrowly escaped the first attempt when a 20-year-old, Matthew Crooks, from Pennsylvania, shot a bullet during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.
Trump’s ear was grazed by a bullet during the incident, which tragically led to the death of one rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, and injuries to two others.
Fortunately, Secret Service agents subdued the shooter after he opened fire at the former president.
Donald Trump is contesting the US presidential election under the Republican Party scheduled for November 2024, in which many political watchers believe he stands a chance of winning.
He faces incumbent US vice president, Kamala Harris, who is the Democratic Party’s candidate for the country’s number one position at the polls.
