A bill seeking to make voting compulsory for all eligible Nigerian citizens has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The proposed legislation mandates that all qualified voters must participate in local, state, and federal elections, with penalties for non-compliance. These penalties may include a ₦10,000 fine or six months imprisonment, according to earlier deliberations.
Supporters of the bill argue it will strengthen civic responsibility and boost electoral participation, which has historically been low in Nigeria. Critics, however, are raising concerns about voter freedom, enforcement logistics, and the state’s ability to provide safe and accessible voting environments.
Further deliberation and public hearings are expected as the bill heads to the committee stage.
