The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reportedly extended the service year of Ms. Rita Ushie—popularly known as Raye on Instagram—by two months, following her recent viral posts criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration over worsening economic conditions.
According to Sahara Reporters, the decision was made shortly after Raye’s outspoken comments gained widespread attention online, where she condemned the government for the rising cost of living and hardship facing Nigerian youths.
While the NYSC has not officially stated the reason for the extension, sources cited by Sahara Reporters suggest it may be a form of disciplinary action linked to what is being viewed in some circles as “politically sensitive conduct” by a serving corps member.
Raye had taken to her Instagram stories and reels to express frustration over the state of the economy, accusing the Tinubu-led government of failing to prioritize the welfare of citizens, especially young people.
The reported extension has sparked strong reactions across social media, with supporters criticizing the NYSC for what they call an attempt to intimidate or punish free speech, while others say public servants must remain apolitical during national service.
