United Nations, New York — Russia has accused Israel of lacking transparency in its nuclear activities and criticised the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for what it described as a double standard in its treatment of Middle Eastern nations.
Speaking during a United Nations session, Russia questioned why Israel has not been subjected to full-scale nuclear inspections, despite long-standing global concerns over non-proliferation.
“Israel is still not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which means full IAEA inspections are not conducted on its nuclear facilities,” a Russian representative stated. “Meanwhile, Iran—despite being the most inspected country—faces bombings and civilian casualties instead of international commendation.”
Moscow expressed concern that the IAEA has never publicly demanded Israel’s accession to the NPT, calling the agency’s stance “fraudulent” and biased.
“The IAEA Director-General has yet to call for Israel’s inclusion in the NPT framework. This inconsistency undermines the credibility of the non-proliferation regime,” the Russian envoy added.
The comments are expected to intensify ongoing international debates around nuclear transparency, particularly in the Middle East, where geopolitical tensions remain high.
Israel has long maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding its nuclear capabilities and has neither confirmed nor denied possession of nuclear weapons.
