Mr. Moses Osogi, Commissioner for Environment in Cross River State, has expressed deep concern over the poor sanitary conditions at both the male and female hostels of the University of Calabar (UniCal).
During a routine inspection as part of the May edition of the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, Osogi described the state of the hostels as “appalling,” noting that the university was not meeting basic environmental standards. “The uncleanliness of these hostels is unacceptable,” he said. “UniCal must do more to ensure healthy living conditions for its students.”
Despite his reservations about the hostels, Osogi commended the overall level of compliance with the May sanitation exercise across Calabar. “Even with the brief interruption in April due to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), I am pleased with how residents responded this month,” he remarked, rating the metropolis’s participation as “high and impressive.”
Acknowledging broader waste-management challenges in the state, the commissioner praised the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for its recent intervention.
He urged residents to request waste receptacles provided under the NDDC initiative, emphasizing that the bins are “for the benefit of the public” and will facilitate more effective waste evacuation throughout Cross River.
He disclosed that the State Government was committed to collaborate with UniCal to improve student accommodations.
“We stand ready to support the university in enhancing living conditions and upholding environmental best practices,” he said.
