Contractors Left Unpaid as Government Focus Shifts to Politics — Senator Seriake Dickson

Former Bayelsa State Governor and serving senator, Seriake Dickson, has strongly criticized the federal government over its failure to pay contractors, saying the administration appears more concerned with political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections than fulfilling its financial obligations.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, Dickson decried what he described as the “grounding” of government operations due to the non-payment of contractors who have already executed projects and committed resources.

“The government has grounded; contractors who have done their jobs and committed their resources cannot be paid. Maybe there is too much preoccupation with politics and 2027. Maybe there is too much concentration on receiving defectors across the country,” he said.

Senator Dickson warned that the failure to prioritize economic governance, particularly in honoring financial commitments to contractors, is threatening the nation’s infrastructure drive and investor confidence.

His remarks come amid growing frustration in the National Assembly over delayed capital releases and stalled public projects. Other lawmakers have similarly raised concerns that despite budgetary allocations, funds are not being disbursed, leading to halted projects and unpaid debts running into billions.

Dickson urged the executive to refocus its attention on governance and economic stability, rather than engaging in premature political activities that do little to address the pressing needs of Nigerians.
