The arrests followed a joint investigation between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the National Police Agency of Japan (NPA).
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi on Monday, February 17, praised the collaboration, stating that it has been instrumental in tackling cybercrime.
The investigation began on April 3, 2024, after the NPF National Cybercrime Centre, working with Nigeria’s National Central Bureau and NCB Tokyo, received reports of five cybercrime cases involving 13 suspects operating from Nigeria.
The investigation led to the arrest of 11 suspects who were part of a network using social media platforms, particularly Instagram, to create fake romantic relationships.
Victims were tricked into transferring funds, which were then converted into cryptocurrency and funneled into digital wallets in Nigeria.
Adejobi confirmed the recovery of $33,320, with efforts continuing to recover more stolen funds and dismantle the syndicate.
He reiterated the NPF’s commitment to ensuring public safety by using advanced technologies to combat cybercrime.
