Ex-National Secretary, Dr. Bugaje described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu As A Man Surrounded By Incompetent Advisers

Dr. Usman Bugaje, a former National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress (AC), has shared concerns about Nigeria’s governance, criticizing the current political culture, stating it opposes the principles of good governance, such as accountability, transparency, and the rule of law, during an interview with VANGUARD.

Dr. Bugaje described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a man surrounded by incompetent advisers.

He lamented the decline in Tinubu’s progressiveness, which he had previously observed during their time in the AC.

Bugaje raised concerns about recent tax reform bills presented to the National Assembly and alleged that they were introduced without proper procedure or consultation, calling the approach suspicious and undemocratic.

Bugaje also highlighted issues in governance and policy-making.

He stated that the government’s lack of foresight and understanding of pressing issues, particularly in agriculture and education.

He cited a 30-million-metric-ton grain deficit in 2023 and its likely worsening due to floods and insecurity.

Additionally, he pointed out that many students in northern Nigeria cannot afford education due to rising costs and insufficient support from the government’s student loan program.

Bugaje argued that governance should follow a corporate, scientific approach focused on people, purpose, and performance.

However, he observed that policies are often poorly planned and lack consultation with key stakeholders, such as governors and the National Economic Council.

He criticized political leaders for prioritizing personal and political interests over public welfare and mentioned that government officials spent millions on festivities while millions of Nigerians face starvation.

“There is a huge demand for money and we have seen what have happened in this festive season. Ministers were found in Abuja spending hundreds of millions of naira on ceremonies; sharing money while 90% or more of the citizens could not feed. The last statistics I read has it that 33 million Nigerians are on the verge of starvation; that they will starve, in this country. These are the issues I think we need to be looking at,” he said.Tap Here for the Full Story
