President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of the Group Life Assurance policy for federal public servants, ensuring financial relief for the families of deceased government employees, including top-ranking officials.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday at the State House in Abuja after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, said the coverage would apply for the 2025/2026 policy year.
“The Federal Government has taken out a life policy on each public servant. In the unfortunate event of death, the next of kin will receive benefits to cushion the loss,” Walson-Jack told journalists.
She emphasized that the move reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of federal employees, stating that the policy applies broadly — not just to civil servants but also to the President, Vice President, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and staff across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) funded through the Treasury.
Paramilitary agencies also covered under the assurance scheme include:
- Nigeria Immigration Service
- Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
- Nigeria Correctional Service
- Federal Fire Service
- Federal Road Safety Corps
- National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
- Office of the National Security Adviser
The policy, now managed by 17 accredited insurance underwriters, will be operational only after the required premiums are paid — in line with the “no premium, no cover” rule mandated by the federal government.
“This policy has been in existence for several years, but many public servants remain unaware of its provisions,” Walson-Jack noted.
The renewed life assurance policy aims to bring transparency and reassurance to the families of Nigeria’s federal workforce.
