Food Scarcity: Edo Govt Commerce Cultivation of 3,000 Hectares of Farmland

The Edo State Government has begun cultivating 3,000 hectares of farmland across the state’s three Senatorial Districts.

As part of this initiative, 60 hectares (148 acres) have already been cultivated in Iguoriakhi, located in Ovia South West Local Government Area, within the Edo South Senatorial District, marking the start of this year’s farming season.

This initiative by the Edo State Government marks the first phase of Governor Okpebholo’s Back-to-Farm project.

Okpebholo recently toured the farm settlement under inspection by Dr. Osagie Peter, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Following the tour, the governor announced plans to establish similar farm settlements in Edo Central and Edo North.

We are committed to advancing agriculture as a key driver of Edo’s economic growth. This is my second visit into the field to ensure food production for our people.

A substantial portion of land has already been cleared, and more will follow. In this initial phase, we aim to clear approximately 3,000 hectares. Similar farm settlements will be developed in Edo Central and Edo North,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to farming in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing Edo State’s commitment to food production.

Dr. Osagie Peter, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted that the first phase of the project would benefit around 250 farm heads.

He also noted that the Government’s Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement spans approximately 2,350 hectares, with a significant portion already allocated to permanent crops such as oil palm and rubber trees.

Acquired in 1962, the settlement remains a vital asset for agricultural development in the state
