In what could signal a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, four serving governors under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly considering defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to a report by ThisDay newspaper.
The governors allegedly in talks to switch allegiance are:
- Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State
- Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State
- Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State
- Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State
Sources cited in the ThisDay report suggest the planned defections are part of a broader strategy to bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances for a second term in office.
While none of the governors have publicly confirmed the move, political analysts believe the development could significantly alter the balance of power, especially in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones where the PDP traditionally holds sway.
President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has yet to officially declare his intention to seek re-election, but recent activities within the APC suggest that groundwork for a 2027 campaign may already be underway.
Attempts to get official comments from the governors or their spokespersons were unsuccessful as of press time.
