Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, has provided an update on the health of former Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba, who is currently receiving treatment after being diagnosed with prostate cancer and TB.
Mashaba’s illness has sparked concern across the South African football fraternity, with many supporters and former players wishing him a speedy recovery.
Following reports about his health, Maile visited the veteran coach and said he was encouraged by Mashaba’s positive attitude despite the challenges he is facing.
“After receiving news of his ill health, we paid a courtesy visit to Coach Mashaba and are pleased to report that he is in high spirits and remains positive,” said Maile.
The MEC also called on South Africans to keep the former national team coach in their thoughts and prayers.
“We wish him a speedy recovery and urge members of the public to keep him in their prayers,” added Maile.
However, Maile warned the public against individuals who are allegedly using Mashaba’s situation to scam well-wishers.
“We also caution against extortionists who are fraudulently using his name to solicit money from the public,” a concerned Maile warned.
The warning comes after reports emerged that some people were requesting donations purportedly to assist with Mashaba’s medical expenses.
Maile stressed that any legitimate fundraising or support initiatives would be communicated through official channels.
“A formal statement will be issued with the correct details for Good Samaritans who may wish to offer support and assistance.”
Mashaba remains one of South Africa’s most respected football figures, having coached Bafana Bafana and played a significant role in the development of young players throughout his coaching career.
