Halima Waziri, a Nigerian citizen and former critic of the Jonathan administration, has issued a public apology to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, GCON, for what she described as unfair criticism of his leadership during the 2015 general elections.
In a statement shared on social media and addressed directly to the former president, Waziri expressed deep regret over her past actions and acknowledged that her judgment at the time was clouded by misinformation and political sentiment.
“Dear former President Goodluck Jonathan GCFR, GCON,
My name is Halima Waziri. I would like to use this medium to officially apologize to you for criticizing and condemning your administration in the year 2015. Until after you left office, I didn’t fully understand the depth of the sacrifices you made for this country,” she wrote.
Waziri’s open letter continued with praise for Jonathan’s peaceful concession of defeat and democratic values, noting that his leadership style became more appreciated in hindsight, particularly in contrast with subsequent administrations.
Her public apology has since gained attention online, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some commended her for the humility to admit past wrongs, others pointed to the broader trend of political re-evaluations occurring across the country in light of current socio-political realities.
As of press time, former President Jonathan has not issued a formal response to the apology.
