Barcelona are reportedly keen on bolstering their left wing, and 21-year-old Nico is seen as a key target following his strong performances for club and country. However, Deco’s comments signal that any potential deal will be based strictly on merit and sporting fit — not personal ties.
“Nico’s name was already on the table last season,” Barça sporting director Deco confirmed when asked about the club’s interest in Athletic Club star Nico Williams.
“The idea of signing him has always been there.”
Addressing recent speculation that Nico’s close friendship with Lamine Yamal could influence a move to the Camp Nou, Deco clarified:
“Their friendship is a nice bonus, of course… but this isn’t a club for friends — we’re here to work and to win.”
