Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how he once sacked his daughter from his farm for not being punctual to work.
Obasanjo made this revelation while hosting the new Chairman of the Board of Management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Dr. Dayo Israel, who paid him a courtesy visit at his Penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
While offering words of encouragement to Dr. Israel, Obasanjo emphasized that a leader who seeks success must be willing to step on toes.
Citing an example, he recounted how he dismissed his daughter from his farm years ago for lateness.
According to him, the action had a profound effect on all his employees, making them realize that if he could discipline his own daughter, no one was exempt.
He said: “No leader of note that I have ever come across achieved success without stepping on toes.”
Dr. Israel was accompanied by the FMC Abeokuta Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, and members of his management team.
The former president, according to a statement by the hospital’s Head of Public Relations, Dr. Segun Orisajo, said:
“If you’re doing a job and you’re not stepping on toes, then you’re not effective.
“Shortly after I left office as Head of State, my first daughter, who was then studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, was engaged on my farm to gain practical experience during her long vacation.
“On her first day, she resumed work at 7:15 a.m. instead of the usual 7 o’clock. I warned her, reminding her that she had an obligation to set a good example for other workers. I also told her I would not hesitate to take action if it happened again.
“To my amazement, she was late again the following day. I did not hesitate to send her back right from the gate.
“Not surprisingly, this had a significant effect on all my employees. They realized that if I could do this to my daughter, no one was above the rules.” Read Full Details
