Tragedy struck Ibadan as a stampede at a children’s funfair claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others injured. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has taken over the investigation into the devastating incident, which has sparked widespread outrage.

The stampede reportedly occurred when thousands of participants rushed to gain access to an event organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, in collaboration with an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat. Initially planned for 5,000 children, the event witnessed an overwhelming turnout of over 7,500 attendees, leading to chaos...N..>>Don’t Miss Out! CLICK HERE TO KEEP READING> >>>

Police confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with the stampede, including Prophetess Naomi and Hamzat. The ex-queen reportedly collapsed during her detention and was rushed to the Police Hospital in Eleyele for treatment. A hospital worker, who spoke under anonymity, confirmed their admission but declined to provide further details, citing the sensitivity of the case.

Adeoye Allen-Taylor, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Council at Adeoyo State Specialist Hospital, stated that four children were still receiving treatment at the facility. Meanwhile, the University College Hospital, Ibadan, confirmed five fatalities among the victims brought to their facility.

The Oyo State Government has directed all media houses and organizers hosting public events to enforce stringent safety measures, particularly for gatherings involving children. Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Dotun Oyelade, warned that any negligence jeopardizing public safety would attract severe penalties.

Governor Seyi Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced the cancellation of his December 25th birthday celebrations in honor of the victims. “This is a painful and unfortunate incident. I will remain indoors on my birthday to mourn these children,” he stated.

The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi expressed heartfelt condolences. Chief Sanya Atofarati, PDP Publicity Secretary, attributed the tragedy to economic hardships that compel families to seek free entertainment for their children.

Fayemi described the incident as heartbreaking, urging authorities to prioritize safety at public events.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Agidigbo FM House, one of the event’s co-hosts, has been shut down. This move aligns with the ongoing investigation led by the IGP.

As grieving families mourn their loved ones, the incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures at public gatherings to prevent such avoidable tragedies...N..>>Don’t Miss Out! CLICK HERE TO KEEP READING> >>>
