On Thursday, June 5, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun commissioned 31 newly acquired gunboats for the purpose of keeping the nation’s waterways safe.
The new gunboats were acquired for the Nigeria Police Force Marine Unit, the IGP said.
A statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer said the operational gunboats were commissioned during an event to mark the Force’s investment in maritime security.
He also said the new gunboats would help in efforts to secure the waterways, combat crimes and ensure the safety of all citizens within the maritime space.
Accompanied by senior officers of the Force and other partners l, the IGP assured that through this acquisition, the police will remain alive to its responsibility of securing the waterways.
Egbetokun said the purchase of these gunboats also marks the beginning of evolving security dynamics within the force.
He said that the deployment of these assets would create the pathway for a renewed drive among personnel towards strengthening maritime policing.
He added that the gunboats are highly sophisticated and are equipped with optimal navigation and communication technologies that deliver needed responses to maritime crimes.
He assured Nigerians of the police readiness to partner with other security agencies to ensure the safety of the nation’s maritime space.
The IGP further charged officers of the force under the Marine Unit to ensure they put the new equipment to use for the good of the people that have sworn to protect.
