The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has invited Nigerians to visit him at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility.
Kanu made this invitation after a Kenyan High Court ruled on his extradition to Nigeria. His Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed this on Friday after meeting with him.
Kanu was rearrested in June 2021 and extradited to Nigeria through extraordinary rendition. However, on June 24, the Kenyan High Court in Nairobi declared his rendition unlawful and illegal.
Reacting to the judgment, Kanu praised his lawyers and family for the victory.
Ejimakor posted on X: “After today’s visit, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu hailed his lawyers and siblings for the stunning victory from Kenya. He also extended an open invitation to anyone who doubts his messages through his lawyers to visit him personally at the DSS.”
Kanu’s legal team has repeatedly argued that his continued detention violates international law, following the illegal manner in which he was brought back to Nigeria. They have called on the Federal Government to obey both local and foreign court rulings by releasing him unconditionally.
Meanwhile, the ruling has sparked celebrations among IPOB supporters who see it as a major step towards their leader’s freedom. Many have urged President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly on the judgment to end the prolonged legal and political crisis surrounding Kanu’s case.
Security analysts believe the Kenyan court’s decision may complicate Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Kenya if the judgment is ignored. They warn that the situation could fuel further agitations in the Southeast if not handled with caution.
IPOB has also called on international bodies, including the United Nations and African Union, to intervene and pressure Nigeria to release Kanu, whom they describe as a prisoner of conscience.
