A senior Israeli official has said that Saturday’s unprecedented military strikes on Iran included efforts to target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, marking a dramatic escalation in regional tensions.
The strikes, carried out in what Israel described as a pre-emptive operation, were launched in coordination with the United States and reportedly struck multiple sites in and around Tehran early on Saturday.
According to Israeli sources, leadership targets including Khamenei’s office complex and the president’s residence were among those hit in the opening wave of attacks.
Iranian state media and official statements have not confirmed the death or injury of either Khamenei or Pezeshkian. Reports indicate that Khamenei was not in Tehran and had been moved to a secure location, while the Iranian presidency has said Pezeshkian is alive and well.

The joint strike follows months of rising tensions over Tehran’s nuclear and missile programs and comes after failed diplomatic talks aimed at limiting those capabilities.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has already launched missile retaliations against U.S. bases in the Gulf region, and the situation threatens to draw in wider Middle East powers.
Israeli leaders have framed the operation as necessary to address what they see as an existential threat, but international concern is growing over the potential for a broader regional conflict.
