The Yobe State Security Hisbah Board has destroyed 243 cartons of alcoholic beverages in Damaturu, the state capital, as part of its ongoing enforcement of Sharia-compliant laws in the state.
The destruction exercise, which took place on Friday was conducted in the presence of security personnel and government officials. According to the Hisbah command, the confiscated alcohol was seized during recent operations across various parts of the state.
A senior official of the Hisbah Board stated that the action was taken in line with Islamic principles and Yobe State’s prohibition laws regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol.
“Our mandate is to uphold moral values and rid the state of substances that are considered harmful or forbidden,” the official said.
The exercise drew mixed reactions from residents, with some praising the effort as a step toward maintaining public morality, while others questioned the broader impact on personal freedoms and local businesses.
This latest destruction adds to a growing list of similar actions taken by Hisbah boards in northern Nigeria.
