According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has also sanctioned a $32 million allocation for the FGN/IFAD/NDDC Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project. This initiative is designed to assist rural farmers and enhance agribusinesses in the region.

In a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari has been elected Vice Chairman of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a United Nations specialized agency exclusively dedicated to transforming agriculture. His election took place at the 48th Session of the IFAD Governing Council in Rome, Italy (February 12–13, 2025), further cementing Nigeria’s leadership in global agricultural transformation.w

“His election is seen as a recognition of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to transform its agricultural sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“The Governing Council is the IFAD’s highest decision- making body for 180 member states, represented by a Governor and an alternate.

“The Bureau of the Governing Council has its Chairman, Mr. Christophe Schiltz from Luxemburg, two Vice Chairmen, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, from Nigeria and H.E. Tatiana Rosito from Brazil.

“In recent months, IFAD has approved several key initiatives for Nigeria, reinforcing its support for the country’s agricultural development. These include:
A two-year extension of the FGN/IFAD Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) to strengthen smallholder farming.

“An additional $32 million allocation for the FGN/IFAD/NDDC Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project, aimed at supporting rural farmers and agribusinesses.

“The approval of $86.7 million for the FGN/IFAD Value Chain in the North (VCN) initiative, which focuses on enhancing agricultural value chains in Northern Nigeria.
