IWA President, Nneka Chimezie, at a briefing in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, vowed to drag the Lagos State Government to court for a legislation that prioritizes Yoruba language.

According to her, other languages should also be given the same treatment because Lagos is a cosmopolitan state.

“They should make it open: Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba – should be taught,” she said.

She said this while lamenting that Igbo language needed to be saved from extinction.

Her briefing held just a few days after the Abia State Government announced plans to make Igbo language a compulsory subject in the school curriculum.

When MyNigeria contacted Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary slammed IWA, just as he wonder how they would feel if Yoruba women in Abia and other Igbo states also decide to sue the governments for not including Yoruba language in their educational curriculum.

He told MyNigeria in Yoruba, “I just saw the headline of the story. It’s a sign of entitlement. If they want to go to court, let them go.”

While laughing off the news, Akosile made gest of their threat, saying, “Yoruba people in Imo, Abia, Enugu or what have you, should also sue the governments there, Abi.

“It is too much familiarity. That’s why I like the Hausas; they won’t drag with you because they know it is your father’s house. In this case, it is like renting a house but dragging ownership with the landlord.”

Also reacting, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Print Media, Wale Ajetunmobi, described the news as troubling.

He wrote on X in Yoruba language, which translates, “This is trouble. The caretaker of a shop is doing everything possible to make himself the owner. If we talk now, they will demand our head.”
