Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged investors and tourists to explore the untapped potential of Lagos’ waterways during the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta held on Saturday, December 21.
The event, attended by dignitaries including the Governor’s wife, Dr Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat, and Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, celebrated the state’s rich aquatic heritage.

Intricately decorated boats enthralled attendees while aboard a yacht, the governor led an exploration tour of the waterways.
“This extraordinary event is not just a reflection of our cultural richness but also a vibrant showcase of Lagos’ unique connection to water—an essential part of our identity and livelihood,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He highlighted the significance of the state’s water bodies covering one-third of Lagos as vital for transportation, tourism, and ecological balance.
The governor emphasised the alignment of the regatta with his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S.Plus agenda, which prioritises tourism and the creative economy as catalysts for socio-economic growth.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, lauded the regatta as a celebration of Lagosians’ heritage and a driver of tourism.
“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ underscores the integral role of our waterways in shaping our history and identity,” she said.
Benson-Awoyinka also praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to enhancing waterways infrastructure and promoting environmental sustainability.
The day’s festivities concluded with live performances by musical stars Niniola, Atawewe, Pheelz, and 9ice, leaving attendees inspired by Lagos’ vibrant culture and its vision for the future.
The Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 reaffirmed the state’s status as a premier destination for tourism and innovation.
