With a 1-0 win over Oxford United at Turf Moor, Burnley extended their unbeaten league run to 18 matches and reclaimed the automatic promotion spots in the Championship. The game-winning goal was scored in the 33rd minute when Oxford defender Michal Helik made an own goal....TAP HERE TO READ FULL DETAILS.>>

Helik had put the ball in his own net after deflecting a cross by Josh Cullen. After a clever backheel from Zian Flemming, Lyle Foster missed the target with a shot, and Burnley came close to taking the lead when Flemming missed the target from eight yards out. The Clarets wasted a couple of early opportunities, but they were eventually rewarded when, under pressure from Burnley’s attackers, Helik headed in a cross from Cullen.

This goal gave Burnley their first home win since a run of scoreless draws at Turf Moor that started on December 21. Unmarked at the back post, Greg Leigh had an opportunity to equalise just before halftime, but his cushioned header from Helik’s effort went wide of the mark.

United got a few more half-chances but were unable to convert any of them, leaving Burnley custodian James Trafford with little to no action. Although Oxford played better in the second half, they were unable to score due to Burnley’s stout defence. The visitors had a great chance to extend their extraordinary unbeaten record, but Burnley’s tenacious defence kept them scoreless for the ninth game in a row.

Burnley had many late-game chances to extend their lead, but Jamie Cummings of Oxford made several key saves to keep the game tight. After two quick stops by Foster, Jeremy Sarmiento’s powerful 25-yard strike was also stopped by Cummings.

Thanks to the win, Burnley jumped to second place in the league, one point behind Leeds United and Sheffield United, respectively, although playing one more game than Leeds and Sheffield.

They passed United on goal differential. Oxford lost their first match under manager Gary Rowett’s tenure at Turf Moor, despite entering the match on a nine-match winning run. This is what pushed Oxford up the league rankings to sixteenth. Your most up-to-date English, Full Championship table is beneath this:
