The loan in question, amounting to $2.2 billion, was approved by the National Assembly on Thursday. The request was made by President Bola Tinubu, who outlined the funds’ intended use for critical developmental projects and economic interventions. Despite the approval, the loan has sparked debates over its potential impact on the country’s already strained economy.
Atiku Abubakar had reacted strongly to the development, describing the administration’s borrowing approach as detrimental to Nigerians. He attributed the nation’s financial challenges to what he referred to as “failed trial-and-error policies” and loan management strategies, arguing that these policies exacerbate economic pressures and harm citizens.
In response, Moses Odaudu, president of the APDD, dismissed Atiku’s criticism as lacking substance. He accused the former vice president of trivializing the government’s intentions and undermining efforts to address economic challenges. Odaudu emphasized that the loans are part of strategic plans to boost national development under Tinubu’s administration.
Odaudu further stated that Atiku’s comments failed to recognize the assurances provided by the federal government regarding the transparent and accountable use of the borrowed funds. He urged the former vice president to step back from political commentary, claiming that such remarks might mislead some Nigerians and create unnecessary tension.
He said: “Atiku must thus admit to himself that it is time to quit politics and refrain from intervening in national issues so that he does not allow his diminished capacity to lead some Nigerians astray.”
