Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up about his prison experience under the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, in 1995, revealing that his outspoken stance on national and international issues led to his imprisonment.
Speaking at an interactive session with young future African leaders, Obasanjo reflected on the pivotal moments that shaped his journey, including his decision to seek the presidency in 1999.
The session, which took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, was organized by the Future Africa Leaders Foundation. It featured 10 winners of the Challenging Future Africa Leaders Awards, a program designed to empower young leaders across the continent. Obasanjo shared his insights with the participants, emphasizing the importance of strong leadership in shaping Africa’s future.
In his address, Obasanjo explained that his desire to save Nigeria from potential disintegration was the driving force behind his decision to run for president in 1999. “The quest to save Nigeria was why I sought the presidency,” he said, reflecting on the state of the country at the time.
Obasanjo also took the opportunity to praise Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the founder of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, for his remarkable work since 2013. “What Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has been doing is marvelous,” he said. “Some may say it is just a drop in the ocean, but many drops in the ocean make the ocean. I am very pleased and satisfied with him on this project and will continue to wish him all the best.”
The interactive session was a celebration of the achievements of young leaders and a reminder of the ongoing importance of visionary leadership for Africa’s future….Tap Here for the Full Story
