New Tax System to Take Effect January 2026 Pending Presidential Assent — The Nation

A new national tax system is set to be implemented in January 2026, contingent on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected approval of the harmonized Tax Reform Bills, according to a report by The Nation.

The proposed six-month window between the President’s assent and the full rollout is intended to serve as a public awareness and preparation phase, aimed at ensuring that Nigerians are adequately educated on the provisions of the reformed tax laws.

A government source familiar with the process told The Nation that the period will not only focus on nationwide sensitization campaigns, but also on laying the groundwork for effective enforcement of the new fiscal framework.

The harmonized versions of the bills represent a significant milestone in the Tinubu administration’s broader push for comprehensive tax reform, with goals of increasing compliance, simplifying the tax code, and boosting national revenue.

If signed into law, the reforms would mark one of the most ambitious overhauls of Nigeria’s tax structure in recent years.
